Last time, we began a two-part series taking a closer look at the history of software development. If you missed it, you can find it here. Today we are going to finish or foray into the past, starting with software in the 1970s.

The 1970s

The 70’s were a mini golden age of software development. This decade brought with it the first microprocessor, as well as the birth of Microsoft in 1975, the first Apple computer in 1976, the development of Oracle, and the first spreadsheet software, VisiCalc.

The 1980s and Beyond

During the 1980s, companies began to see the value in user-friendly graphical interfaces. Apple and Microsoft both began producing operating systems with this purpose in mind and lead to the modern era of convenient and easy-to-use software that we enjoy today. Microsoft Office quickly became the preferred office suite in 1989. Technology that is fully integrated into our everyday lives really got traction in the 90s with the rise of the internet. Most of our current software and hardware would be impossible without the capabilities that the internet allows.

The Future

Software development is unrecognizable when compared to even five years ago, and the future seems bright. As we keep moving forward and making new discoveries, our software will be right there beside us, enabling to go farther than we could ever imagine. Where can software take you?
